What is polyethylene?

PE pipes, are flexible plastic hoses commonly used in irrigation and drainage systems. Hence, it is also known as an irrigation hose or irrigation tubing. The abbreviation LDPE stands for ‘Low-Density Poly Ethene’, a characteristic that gives the hoses their flexibility. These properties make them particularly useful for installations where flexibility is required.

What are PE pipes used for?

Despite its flexibility, polyethylene pipe is remarkably strong due to its robust material, making it water-resistant, insulating and durable. It can withstand heavy-duty use and is not prone to tearing, even in freezing conditions.

These advantages make it very suitable for various applications, such as irrigation tubing for watering your garden or lawn, irrigation hose in horticulture, waste water drainage, swimming pool heating, or as a drinking water supply for agricultural purposes. (Note: not suitable for human consumption.)

How do you know which size is right for you? If you choose a diameter that is too small, water flow may be compromised, leading to potential pressure loss. Opting for a pipe that is too large, on the other hand, may not cause an immediate problem, but it will unnecessarily increase your costs. And that’s a waste!

Choosing the right size

Choosing the right diameter of PE pipe depends on various factors, such as pressure loss, height difference, and length. Is it a short distance with low water flow? Or a long distance requiring a substantial amount of water?

Fortunately, we have a handy table that provides guidelines for the right size. It shows the maximum flow rate in m³/hour per diameter with a maximum pressure loss of 0.5 Bar over a distance of 30 meters. Click here for more information on how to choose the right diameter of polyethylene pipe.
